Emily Dickinson poem, typography section
I stepped from plank to plank | Emily Dickinson poem Detail Description

About the Project

For this exercise in typography, we were given the choice of several poems. The instructions were simply to use a typographic treatment to illustrate the poem. The restrictions were that we had to do it in black and white, and shades of grey.

About the Approach

Before I even began illustrating the poem, I examined the poem carefully. I read it out loud, to get a feel for the rhythm and meaning. I wrote down my interpretations of the poem. I then did some research and compared my reflections with the interpretations of others. Only then did I begin to illustrate the poem. I absolutely love fonts! Before I begin a project like this, I carefully choose a font or fonts that I think has the appropriate character. I set out a few words in several fonts, before I settled on these two. I set this poem in sets of two lines, and tried to bring out the rhythm, speed, and melody of the poem.
