Painted Jazz-scape Walls, Fantasy Building series
Painted Jazz-scape | Fantasyscape series, Photoshop Detail Description

About The Project

These photos were just too wild and crazy! I had to use them in the Fantasyscape 3D motion "fly-through" video.

I don't know who painted these walls, but they are something of a landmark in Winnipeg, right across from 'Old Market Square'. I am not sure why these vibrant, jazzy, and colourful walls were painted: they don't seem to be on behalf of any establishment at that spot. If you walk through the opening in the centre of the two walls (at the left of this photo), you will see that they frame a very grungy parking garage.

Note the shopping cart on the right side of the opening: That belongs to an old, stooped, Chinese lady who is forever walking her cart along these streets and collecting cans and bottles, never talking to anybody, always intent on collecting her cans. I have observed this Chinese lady and her shopping cart in this district since 1989! It was just a bit of luck to be taking these photos while she was there.

About the Technique

I saturated these colours a great deal in Photoshop, to bring out the raucous, joyous noise of the images. I also darkened them and heightened their contrast to make the interior of the opening in the walls more mysterious, and to bring out the light in the centre of the opening.
