Memory Lantern
Memory Lantern | digital photo, words Detail Description

About The Project

This was another exercise in combining one strong photographic image with words of my choosing. The words should not be random: they should add another contextual reality to the photo and help to further communicate an idea, a concept, or even simply complement an image. I guess I am just fascinated with enigma! I love the glow cast by this lantern of mine. The dried leaves, and the book on primitive art, were not artfully set up for the shoot: this is just how things are naturally arranged in my livingroom. But looking at this scene in the evening with the lightbulb of the lantern providing the sole lighting, I found it so evocative... so suggestive... of memories. Each of the objects in the scene is ripe with memories and associations for me, of course, but I felt that a connection to these objects could also be universal. I chose words that would play with the concept of memories and associations, and words that would enhance the sensual look of the image.

About the Technique

I used Photoshop to enhance my digital photography, of course. I experimented with finding just the right spot for the phrase. It seemed to fit here, in the glow from the lantern. I worked at following the natural glow, and I also worked at integrating the phrase and having it fade in and out. There were several layers of the text, and I used different techniques (modes, opacities) with each.
