| Jetson's Office | graphic simplification, Freehand Detail Description |
About The Project
For this 'graphic simplification' project, I chose to draw the instructors' office space of our brand-spanking-new campus, Red River College's Princess Street campus. The school has a wonderful blend of architecturally historic and jet-age new design. I love this office space. The mixture of kidney-shaped tables and wing-like overhang shapes reminds me of the Jetsons cartoon. And, as you can see from some examples of my art work, retro is 'my bag'. Bring on the fifties style!
About the Technique
The technique you see here is known as 'graphic simplification'. You observe, and then pare everything down, even the shadows, into simple planes. It gets at the essential shape of things. I was surprised at how beautiful and graphically striking things become when stripped down to their bare essentials. Interesting, too, is how 'readable' objects still are. This project was created in Freehand.
