Grids [detail] | using basic graphic forms, Freehand Detail Description

About the Project

PATTERNS & GRIDS: In this project, we were restricted to using black and white, so we could concentrate on the basic shapes of form without having colour distract us. With these basic shapes of form, such as ovals, rectangles, and lines; we were to form a design which represented a basic graphic design concept, such as positive/negative, or rhythm and repetition. This design spoke to me of patterns and grids.

About the Technique

This required lots and lots of thumbnail sketches. One had to be very intuitive, open, and responsive to see what worked and had potential to grow. Translating the thumbnail sketches into drawings in Freehand again required being open to design changes. I altered my original idea quite a bit in Freehand, and feel the piece was stronger for that.
