| Beguile [detail] | exploration of the word 'beguile', Freehand Detail Description |
About the Project
An exploration of letterforms and words and meaning: For this exercise in letterforms, we had to come up with a word of our choosing. Using letterforms alone, we had to create a piece that evokes that word. I chose to explore the word 'Beguile', because it has so many connotations for me that translate visually: Mystery, sinuousness, night-time, intrigue, danger, manipulation, enchantment... We were free to explore any of the letterforms in our chosen word, and in any configuration: the only proviso was that the complete word had to be spelled out at least once.
About the Technique
I first found the font that, to me, had the most potential of being beguiling (apologies for the alliteration). I chose Baskerville, particularly for its wonderfully delicious and sinuous 'g'. I concentrated on the g, and various deep and muted colours to convey the night-time mood insinuated by the word 'beguile'. I am partial to the outline of the tail of the 'g' on the right, along which I curve the word 'beguile'.
